Book Reviews

The main aim of this website is to provide quality Christian Book Reviews of excellent, and true books. We will only review those books that we believe are trustworthy, and therefore you won't find a negative review on BookDisciple! Take some time to read our reviews, but be sure to go on and read the books themselves. Who knows... God might just get your life more in-line with his purposes if you read one of these books.

An update...

I am no longer adding content here. Instead of reviewing books, I am hard at work on my own web-based writing project.

I have developed a keen interest in contemplative spirituality, solitude and silence, and the effect these have on your walk with God. It is all written in the context of Christian spirituality.

I also deliver regular musings on awakening, presence, consciousness and awareness via the FindingSilence.com Blog.

My work at FindingSilence.com will help you attain a state of lasting peace and joy. Through teaching contemplative spirituality, it will help you discover God inside you as your true identity.

Review of When Good Men Are Tempted

When Good Men Are Tempted, Bill Perkins

The Book and its Topic

When Good Men Are Tempted... What a helpful title for a book. Most of the Church somehow manages to stay quiet on the matter of sexual immorality. This causes many disciples to struggle in silence, and to remain enslaved to unholy behavior.

Having a problem with sexual purity is not an easy thing to admit... and as you grow as a Christian, and do more for the Lord, it just gets harder and harder to admit that you don’t have everything sorted out.

Luckily, Bill Perkins had the guts to talk about this problem—excuse me, to write a book about this problem.

What does this mean to you and me? Maybe, if we are willing to stop and allow God to heal us, we won’t have to face the humiliation and shame of our problem one day going public against our will. And our ministry going down the drain with it. Even more importantly, Jesus already did everything to enable us to be free now! And in Revelation he repeatedly admonishes us to live a victorious life.

Having a problem with sexual immorality is not hard or strange in such a sex obsessed world. But, it is still wrong. It is still a sin. And the consequences of sin, is (unfortunately) still death (see James 1:15).

That is why it is such a good idea to use When Good Men Are Tempted to come clean before God. Use this book, based on Bill’s experiences and escape, to allow God to remove this ugly, unwanted part of your life.

Bill starts off When Good Men Are Tempted by explaining why men find women (especially women other than their own wife) so attractive.

Then he will lead you to admit you have a problem. Bill helps you to very practically drag your secrets out of the cave and lay them before God. This helps you get rid of the shame that is keeping you in bondage.

Then it is freedom time! In the third part of the book, Bill explains to you how to become free. He covers what you can do to avoid falling in the future.

Then, finally, Bill details how you can remain free for the rest of your life. This part is particularly handy and includes chapters for married men, for the woman, and on "the M word."

This is an excellent book that I am sure will help many, many disciples of Jesus find freedom from sexual immorality.

BookDisciple.com Power Quote

“No matter which round you’re in, or how many punches you’ve taken, or how many times you’ve been knocked down – God will never give up on you. He’s in your corner. But to experience his grace, you must first recognize your need. You must turn to him and others for help. That’s not easy. Perhaps you realize you have a problem but still believe you can handle it alone. As I mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, guys hate to admit defeat.” – When Good Men Face Temptation, p. 86

So, how does it read?

I managed to finish the book in a couple of days. It is written in a relaxed, easy style, which I could really relate to and enjoy.

My copy has 263 pages, which is not short. But... it is published by Zondervan (my favorite publisher) and it is not trying to kill you by word overload on each page.

All-in-all, Bill did a good job communicating this extremely important topic. You will enjoy reading the book.

What did this book mean to me personally?

Next question... No, just kidding. Being a young man (I was born in 1977), with a healthy doze of testosterone, I struggled with sexual immorality since high school days.

The dangers of pornography were never communicated to me and, considering the culture they grew up in, I cannot really blame my parents.

Shortly after becoming a committed follower of Jesus I realized that things couldn’t go on as they were at that stage. I picked up a few books offering help with sexual sin, and others offering help with sin in general. I also prayed a lot, and made sure to be diligent with daily Bible study.

My problems weren’t completely solved, but there were definite improvements. I would go for extended periods without falling. Occasionally, though, I would let my guard down and Satan would hit me right in the face.

I knew this was not good enough. As a husband, father and committed follower of Jesus, I needed to be victorious. Then, in January 2008, I picked up a copy of When Good Men Are Tempted, and I am really thankful to Bill Perkins. God used him to make a major shift in my life. Finally... freedom!

Thank you for being obedient, Bill! And thank you for writing a book on an unpopular subject. I hope God uses your book to change many, many lives.

Conclusion

Bill never ceases to quote Paul in When Good Men Are Tempted. He brilliantly delves into the advice Paul gave us, and reorganizes it to enable us to see and understand it more clearly.

If you have a problem with sexual immorality, and want a solution that God can use to set you free (that's based on the Bible), look no further.

Ladies, if you suspect your husband is having a struggle, buy the book, read it, and once you understand what he is gong through, give it to him. That way you give God an opportunity to transform his life...

I've read a portion of this book and I am very disheartened. I am a woman who has been married for 8 years. I have always worried that my husband finds other women more appealing than me and this book has given me proof. How am I supposed to live knowing that I wll always be second to his lusts for others?
