Growing Disciples of Christ through Christian Books!
I like Christian books. No, sorry... I love them.
Sometimes I am in the company of loved ones and I catch myself wishing I could rather be alone somewhere reading. It started when I was very young. I read fiction back then, and lots of it.
Every time we entered a book shop, I could ask my dad for a new book and I knew he would buy it for me. Did he spoil me? No, he just knew I would actually read the book and I guess he knew that reading is an excellent habit.
When I became a disciple of Jesus many years later, I started reading Christian books.
It is my favorite pastime.
I cannot walk past a bookshop.
I have tried not buying any new books for a couple of months... and failed miserably!
I can’t live without them. My wife has prohibited me from buying any new Bibles (she will decide when I need a new translation or copy), and she threatened to start a public library with all my Christian literature.
Sometimes, just having a Christian book in my hand makes me feel better. Knowing it is close by can give me an emotional boost...
No, I am not crazy! The thing is... these books have changed my life. I am convinced that God uses Christian books to help us grow.
The authors of these books most probably spent a significant chunk of their time researching the topic. Reading the book is an excellent way for Christians to save some time, and learn from the authors’ insights. We benefit from their hard work...
... and in the process we move closer to where God wants us to be.
Why BookDisciple.com?
I thought about how I could change the world with this passion that God has placed in my heart, and voila... BookDisciple.com!
I am a book disciple. Whenever I read a good book I try and convince my wife, friends, family and fellow Christians to read it. I must tell...
The problem is, very few of these people share my enthusiasm for reading and learning. Luckily, I can reach all people with a passion for books...
...in the whole, wide world...
...through the internet.
But wait! First things first... The most important of all books is the Bible. The Bible is the Living Word of God. I believe it from cover to cover. Everything written in it is true!
Before you read any other books, start reading your Bible – Every Single Day! You should not eat in the morning before you have spend quality time in God’s Word... never mind read other books.
On the back cover of his book Velvet Elvis, Rob Bell writes “God has spoken and the rest is commentary, right?” Christian books contribute to an ongoing discussion.
But reading Christian literature is never as good as reading the Bible!
Still, the fact remains that Christian books are used by God, and I want to recommend some trustworthy ones to you. I pray that God will use these books in your life just like he did in mine.
A disciple is someone who learns from a master (or rabbi). Many centuries ago a disciple would have gone on to become a rabbi one day. Today, it is different. Disciples of Jesus follow Him, learn from Him, and bless others out of our relationship with Him. We never stop learning...
”If we are not teachable, there will be no transformation. If we are unwilling to listen, we are incapable of learning. That is why Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. It is the student of life who will learn how to live.” – Erwin McManus in his book Stand Against the Wind.
I write reviews on all trustworthy books that I read, and post them on this website. The idea is that you read some of the reviews, go on to read some of the books, learn, and then recommend the books to others.
You can become a book disciple yourself!
