Review of Soul Cravings,
by Erwin McManus

BookDisciple.com rating: 9.1

Soul Cravings

The Book and its Topic

Soul Cravings… Erwin McManus is creative. He is an artist. Want proof? Look no further than this book. From the front cover, to the back cover, to the lack of page numbers, to the descriptive pictures used throughout, to the different symbols used for each part of the book, this is a testament of creativity. Yes, kind of like his other books...

Please do not think that is where the appeal of Soul Cravings stops. The message of this book is timeless, excellent and oh so necessary. Erwin claims that God has placed proof of his existence inside each one of us. An utterly outrages claim when you first comprehend it.

Thankfully Erwin goes on to back up his claim.

Erwin identifies three Soul Cravings and discusses each in depth. Beyond doubt? I don’t think so. That would depend on the reader. Do you agree with him or not?

Can you believe like a child believes in Santa Clause and the tooth fairy?

Erwin is not forcing anyone to agree with him. But the arguments he uses are hold more water than those for the tooth fairy… Erwin claims that “We don’t grow into faith; we grow out of it.”

Deep inside we know

Erwin writes “God has placed cravings within your soul that will drive you insane or drive you to him. Your soul longs for God; you might just not know it yet.”

What are your deep inner needs for Intimacy, Destiny and Meaning trying to tell you? Could it be that these elements, these Soul Cravings were put there by a very creative Creator, to testify of his existence?

You will have to pick up this book, and use your most valuable ability. The one that enables you to decide for yourself…

BookDisciple.com Power Quote

“Even as you read this, there is a voice coming not from your
head but from your gut, screaming that you are more than water
and disposable material. So much of your life journey can be
explained by your soul cravings. Your soul knows its uniqueness.
And a voice somewhere deep inside you longs to discover it.
It calls you out and beckons you to pursue it.

“There is something out there to be found, and our souls are
restless to find it.”
– Erwin McManus, Soul Cravings, Seek.

So, how does it read?

Soul Cravings is not the thinnest book I have come across. It does, however, read very easily and tends to grip you enough to want to follow through with your decision to get through it.

As very creative people tend to do, Erwin pulled a surprise by not numbering pages. This doesn’t help me much, since I like to tell my visitors how many pages a book has… ;-) Thanks Erwin!

Soul Cravings has a short introduction, three main sections, and a short conclusion. The three main sections have just over twenty entries each. An entry is a short chapter... It could be as short as 8 words and as longs as ten pages. Go figure.

A nice and interesting twist is that you can read the three main sections in any order. Erwin encourages you to start with the one that has most meaning to you. I read it in order, since I liked the order Erwin chose, but if your ambition is strong than your need for love, or your search for truth, you will start by reading the middle section on Destiny first.

Looking back, this section on dreams, desires, ambitions and significance was my favorite. By a long shot! And I also think it was my search for destiny that really brought me into the vibrant relationship with God that I currently enjoy.

Conclusion

Erwin McManus writes in Entry 16 of the Meaning section “that God has placed within us undeniable proof that he exists.” I sincerely hope that as you read this book you start realizing this. That by looking at who you are and looking at what you need, you see that your soul craves for more than you are currently experiencing…

Is there a better place to find proof of God’s existence than deep inside your soul?

If you already know God and are in a two-way relationship with him through Jesus Christ, this is an excellent book to give to one of your seeking friends. Go on, be a book disciple...
