Review of Turn,
by Max Lucado

BookDisciple.com rating: 8.5

Turn

The Book and its Topic

In Turn, Max Lucado calls the people of America to return to God. To return to God’s Glory, Prayer, God’s Word and Repentance.

He uses 2 Chronicles 7:14 to illustrate that these four turns will lead to God forgiving the sins of America and healing the great land. I am not from America. I am from Africa. But trust me, this is a message that we need to hear all over the world.

The whole world needs God’s healing touch. We are all in trouble with the Almighty Creator.

That is why I recommend that we all go ahead and take the message of 2 Chronicles 7:14 seriously. Max offers excellent insight into the deeper meaning of this verse.

This little book was the Official 2005 National Day of Prayer Theme Book in the United States. And a lot of what it deals with can be classified as prayer. The power of prayer and our folly of not making use of it. Then Max moves onto the subject of regular Bible reading and obeying, and the difficult topic of repentance.

It is not a very thick book, so let me rather not give away too much information here... Go check it out for yourself, and see that Max’s vision is more than a pipe dream.

BookDisciple.com Power Quote

“Tally this up. God makes the boundaries. He determines
the leaders. He dispenses the blessings. The nations exist by
the permission and power of Almighty God. Can we afford to
forget this – can we afford to disregard this single,
silver strand that supports the framework of every country
in the world?

Only at a terrible risk.” – Turn, p. 31.

So, how does it read?

Turn is an excellent example of efficiency. You can communicate a big, important message close to the heart of God using sparse resources. This is a small book, less than 100 pages, with an easy reading lay-out and lots of white space on each page, succeeds in driving home the important message at hand.

I wish all books were this easy and quick to read. Max, now write us a book on efficient communication please. We all need to learn how to communicate like this.

What did this book mean to me personally?

South Africa is not paradise. We need God’s healing hand maybe a bit more than other countries. And you know what, I personally need to repent, fall to my knees and pray. I need to think about God’s glory and forget about my own selfish agendas.

I am guilty. I need to repent.

My prayer is that the church of South Africa starts doing this, and that the rest of our population will follow suit. I also dearly hope that you will grasp the importance of this message in your country, wherever that may be.

Conclusion

God wants to heal your land. Whether that land is in Europe, Africa or North America, we all need to listen and turn back to God. It is not about us, or our ability to rule the world.

It is about God. About His Glory. It has always been, and will always be. Let’s all return to Him and pray that He will restore order on His planet.
